In 2015, the United Nations (UN) and its member states adopted seventeen goals known as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) to help “end all forms of poverty, fight inequality and tackle climate change, while ensuring that no one is left behind” by the year 2030.
The International Co-operative Alliance (ICA), founded in 1895, currently represents 306 co-op federations and organizations in 105 countries. Through its initiative, co-ops have committed themselves to the Co-ops for 2030 Campaign. The ICA grouped the UN’s seventeen sustainable development goals into four large categories:
- Eradicating poverty
- Improving access to basic goods and services
- Protecting the environment, and
- Building a more sustainable food system.
The Co-operative Housing Federation of Canada (CHF Canada) recommends that housing co-ops do their part to eradicate poverty and protect the environment by pledging their co-ops to meet measurable, time-sensitive goals. Co-ops can help end poverty by providing safe and affordable homes. They can protect the environment by reducing their consumption, planting community gardens, and installing LED lights, to name a few possibilities. Small adjustments can make a big difference.
